Review: The Whisper Man

The Whisper Man The Whisper Man by Alex North
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Release Date: 13th June 2019

If you're looking for a wonderfully creepy, mystery, psychological thriller then, look no further.

After Tom's wife dies suddenly, he is the sole carer for their son Jake, which he struggles to deal with, whilst also grieving. Tom decides that they need a fresh start, so they move, unknown to them to a town with a dark past of children disappearing.

This story is told from multiple points of view and weaves the stories wonderfully, building suspense, intrigue and many moments that will creep you out, while at the same time questioning all the characters and being on a rollercoaster of emotions with them. Ultimately I loved the characters, but for some it took a while, but due to great character development they won me over.

This book had me hooked and I struggled to stop listening to it, shouting at Christopher Eccleston as he shared the story. I really enjoyed being part of a buddy read for this too, as it gave me others to share theories with and be creeped out with, which just added to the experience.

In this psychological thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of suspense, as a father and son are caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town.

Review: The Book Club

The Book Club The Book Club by C.J. Cooper
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Release Date: 30th May 2019

The book club was her idea, of course. Alice's.
It was her way into our group. A chance to get close.
I knew from the day she arrived that she couldn't be trusted.
And I was right.
Because Alice didn't come to the village for peace and quiet.
She came for revenge.

Lucy moves to Cotswold village to escape her life in the city after her affair ended with her boss, wanting to start again. She starts making friends with her neighbours, enjoying the idyllic peaceful village and her lunches out, until a new neighbour moves in next door to her... Alice.

Alice inserts herself into the group and suggests the idea of a book club, where she uses this to try to unearth the groups secrets.

I struggled with how the characters in the book dealt with situations, maybe they felt isolated, but I did feel that they would discuss and confront each other more, especially if they were friends.

Good concept and story, with some good twists and turns. I got frustrated with Lucy a lot. I think the book would have benefited from shorter chapters in places to build the atmosphere and named chapters so you knew who's point of view it was, as it did get confusing not knowing who's point of view it was straight away. Overall a good read, especially if you like psychological books, with a bit of thriller.

Review: Deep Cuts

Deep Cuts Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Release Date: 13th March 2025

Absolutely obsessed with this book, I practically read it in a day! The fact that I actually allowed myself so much space and time to read shows how engrossed I was in this world.

The brilliant use of song titles as chapter headings, the grabbing my phone every time a song and artist was mentioned to play alongside my reading as the soundtrack to the book, listening to songs with a new perspective, through someone else's experience, to being transported back to the early 2000's and all that had to offer (so many similarities between what was described in the book and my lived experience in the UK), the bands, the era, the coming of age in that time, it all feels so perfectly captured.

It's within the romance genre, but it's more than a romance book about a girl falling for the musician, it's about said girl learning to love herself and others along the way too.

Being a fan of music and having grown up with it in every part of my life, from a lot of different influences I really loved the deep dive into the songs and geeking out.

For me this was a wonderful nod to a life and era I can relate to and I hope that translates to other age groups.

If you enjoyed Daisy and the Six then I think you'll enjoy this rollercoaster of a love letter to music, whilst also being a book about personal growth.

Is this the final review? I'm not sure, but I needed to get my initial thoughts down.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC.

Review: A Beauty Queen's Guide to Murder and Mayhem

A Beauty Queen's Guide to Murder and Mayhem A Beauty Queen's Guide to Murder and Mayhem by Kristen Bird
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars rounded up

Release Date: 28th February 2025

Stable hand Dakota Green would rather compete in the Hunger Games than Aubergine’s annual beauty pageant. But her late mother's last wish is about to see her trading her muck boots for Jimmy Choos – and uncover a decades-old mystery of a missing beauty queen.

This is a wonderfully humorous book, with a lot of heart, as well as a murder mystery.

When Dakota Green enters the local annual beauty pageant that her dying mother had entered her into, she is amazed at what unravels, not only the mystery that unfolds, but her thoughts and perceptions of her competitors.

I really enjoyed this book and was hooked from the first page, the writing style was very down to earth and full of wit, which endeared me to the characters.

I would class this as a cosy mystery, but so wonderfully written with characters who I loved spending time with and hope there are more from them too.

I will definitely be reading more books by Kristen Bird, her writing style is such a good mix of mystery, wit and intrigue with great characters, with depth and heart.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers, Storm Publishing for this ARC.

Review: A Killer's Code

A Killer's Code A Killer's Code by Isabella Maldonado
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Release Date: 21st January 2025

Firstly I said I wasn't going to jump into the middle of a series this year, but this one slipped through the net, but in all fairness, I didn't feel like I needed to have listened to/read the previous books, it felt like it made a good stand alone story, which I would happily read more in this series.

A fast-paced thriller, with a strong female character, in this multiple POV novel, that is gripping to listen to and had me wanting to listen to it at every opportunity.

I liked the characters and the jumping timelines and points of view, really moved the story along, creating suspense and intrigue. This book is action packed, whilst also staying very human, with real heart.

I can't wait to read more in this series.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers, Thomas & Mercer for this ARC.

Review: Always on My Mind

Always on My Mind Always on My Mind by Carys Green
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Release Date: 27th Febraury 2025

4.5 Stars rounded up

YOU CAN HEAR HIS EVERY THOUGHT... BUT HE CAN HEAR YOURS TOO.

Never again wonder where they are
Never again doubt their feelings for you
Know your partner intimately
OneMind: for the ultimate closeness

In a modern tech advanced world, Anna is a traditional girl, who doesn't understand tech, whereas her husband Elijah always has to have the latest gadget before getting bored of it. So when Elijah announces that he wants them to get a Unity, OneMind chip, Anna is reluctant to say the least.

A chip in which you can hear each others thoughts! What could possibly go wrong? What secrets will be unearthed?

I don't want to give too much away, but safe to say we all have parts of us we don't fully share with others and thoughts we wouldn't want others to hear, but when you are hiding secrets this is amplified.

This book is so well written and really delves into the idea of sharing all your private thoughts every waking moment with your partner. The characters are believable, in their flaws and thinking, touching on controlling behaviours, obsession and idolisation.

This is such a compelling read I was hooked and didn't want to put it down. Such a great concept for a book and really well executed.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC.
